In Fuerteventura island this group or class of fish includes the rays (stingrays, mantas) and the sharks. The fundamental difference from all other fish is that their internal skeleton is made of a cartilaginous structure with a varying degree of calcification, instead of being made of true bone. Moreover, they breathe through externally visible and separate gill slits (5 a 7 pairs) and they generally have a thick skin, with hard, specialised scaless called placoid scales.
